Small Dilemma

I have a small dilemma my dear girlfriends. I found out that there are two very different but great software programs suited for the e-zine WE want to start. Notice the emphasis on the we part. Well Adobe has In-Design which is about $500 and a very high learning curve to it. And Microsoft has Publisher that is for much less than In-Design and a lower learning curve but it takes a lot more work to publish an e-zine with it.

Now I am all for either one of these programs because I can afford either one. I just want your input.
* Has anyone of you ever used either one of these programs?
* Which one would you choose to work with and why?
* If we take this program (Witches E-zine that is)on, I would like to keep on going with it.
* What the hell am I doing here and why am I in this hand basket?

We need to call this magazine something really cool. Something that will get the attention of all Pagans and Witches out there. That includes the younger set, teenagers, who aren't quite sure of his or her path. I want to get them away from the "All Witches are Satanist's" mind set.

And last but not least  .....  I am asking for your help. We won't get paid for this e-zine until we can get someone in charge of advertising. Hell it might just turn into a labor of love for us to just help other uninformed Pagans out there. I kinda like that idea but I know it won't float, so be it.

We will need an Editor in Chief to oversee all material that gets put into this mag. And someone with great artistic skills for artwork or I'll just try to sweet talk an artist I have in mind. I might be able to get her to donate artwork if possible. But if all else fails I'll be willing to buy the artwork from her.

Girlfriends, I really want this e-zine SOOOOOooo damned much to work. I want to get the word out that we are normal people not weirdos like most Christians portray us to be. So I am asking formally for your help if you want to give it ... for free. Notice that for free part there? Please look at the questions near the top and look into what you think might help us all get this thing started.
Thank You.

I love the idea of the magazine and I would be more than willing to help in ways that I can. And now I will throw the cautionary monkey wrench in the mix. The school teacher comes out now. Starting a project is the easy part. Having a concrete plan and an agenda to back it up is the hard part. And the hardest part of all is to get your "people" to do what they said they will do in the time frame that you have set out.
Wow, talk about the proverbial wet blanket.
I would love to see this be successful. I just want you to remember that it's easy for folks to raise their hands and say yeah I'll do that and then life gets in the way. The dedication factor has to be as strong as the want for all that you include.
Shut up Old Croney type....sometimes I wish logic and planning would go visit someone else and let spontenaity come out alone and play but alas, I am The Olde Bagg.
I'm not saying let's don't, I'm saying be sure of the how for your sake. You're the only one you should be concerned about in this, at this stage of the e zine.

I don't have any advice for you at the moment. I just wanted to say that I'm excited for you! Whenever you get off the ground, I'll be subscribing. :)
I'm pretty good at coming up with creative titles, so I'll keep that request in the back of my mind.

I would love to help. I've used publisher and it's pretty easy to use and I like that you can save your templates so that you can just save and then re-enter whatever new information you want which works perfect for this.
I think what we need to do first is figure out who all is going to be a part of this and then get a place to talk about it that is a little easier to round table and discuss. It's awesome that you are getting this started and organized but the more help the better right?
Maybe for a name something like the Witch's Home Daily. Something that is similar to the traditional w omen's magazines from the 50's. So it really kinda say's look traditional just a little different..
And you're in the handbasket because unlike the those who take the express elevator you intend to enjoy how you get there. That and they have snacks.

I'm with the Traveler. I'd use Publisher. It's really easy and you can always convert files to pdf's very easily.

I'd love to help. Not sure what my area of expertise would be. Let me know what you need, and I'll help as much as I can.

Yup. We in the hand basket have the best snacks EVER. =D

I, too, am interested in helping, but like SpiritPhoenix, I'm not sure what my area of expertise would be. I think that this is something that so many pagans of all paths look for, but can't find. I would love to be part of something that gives people what they're looking for. ^-^

I haven't used either, but I pick up software super quick. I'm good with whatever. ^-^

Also, I'm wondering... Would this be a weekly, monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly e-zine?

If we were ever to get this thing going which will take a while. Everyone would either submit stories, spells, recipes for food or herbals or oils, rituals, things to put in their BOS, political stories, how to make things or grow things or whatever we can think of that we wish were in a magazine for us. But I think this will have to wait a while longer.I haven't the energy today to do anymore on it. My Fibro is kicking my ass.

As for the difference in MS Publisher and Adobe InDesign, it really depends on the end result you want (when you are ready to get moving forward on this). I have used both and my preference is InDesign, but some of the first publishing programs I ever worked with were more robust and offered lots of options. InDesign really is a very versatile program and allows you so many more options for customizing what you are working on/with than Publisher will. It also is specifically designed to work seamlessly with most any graphic. I've run into issues with graphics in Publisher. If you aren't going to be graphic intensive, then that may not be a big deal to you. There is a bit of a learning curve with InDesign, but once you have learned how to use it and move around in it, it is really rather easy to use.

As someone who has started LOTS of projects, I can say that having a very clear plan of what it is you want to accomplish is essential. Once you have that in place, you can work more on the how to get there and who can help you. Something else to take into account is the financial aspect of this. As a Pagan business owner, I'd really like to have more advertising options available to me than I currently have, so a project like this is very appealing. If you were to bring in an ads section with paid for spots, you'd be in a position to potentially pay authors for articles or even staff. Just another thought to throw out there to you!
